More than Books.
We are a neighborhood bookstore exclusively featuring underrepresented voices and storytellers. We are devoted to being a safer space for communities to access education, representation, and change through literacy, artistry, and skill-building.
“The Baginski Test”
Our measures for books at Indigo Bridge
It helps meet community needs and/or enhances the community by:
highlighting local authors and artists as much as possible
providing accessibility physically and financially
involving the community or community news
To the best of our knowledge, it does not contain material that is harmful, discriminatory, or disrespectful* to underrepresented groups
*hate speech, racism, sexism, queerphobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, colorism, xenophobia, dehumanization of undocumented people, disrespect toward a religious group
The book/merchandise is by an author/artist/creator who is part of one or more underrepresented* communities
*represented in numbers that are disproportionately low
WHat’s a “Classic?”
We want to reshape the idea of what we consider as “classics”
We often think of “classic literature” as a fixed category based purely on merit—if a book has been canonized, it must because it’s good or important, so we should keep reading it, assigning it, and celebrating it as we always have. Conversely, if a book hasn’t been canonized, it must be because it lacks merit or importance, so there’s no need to read it, assign it, or celebrate it.
Here’s the thing: deeming a book “classic” is a continuous act that impacts how a society thinks of itself and its power structures. Changing what is “classic” is possible. The canon doesn’t need to continue to reinforce oppressive power structures. Readers, educators, critics, publishers, and booksellers can intentionally make the choice to critically examine what has long been deemed “classic” while also elevating narratives that challenge the very structures that have been marginalizing them for generations.

Kim
Owner (she/her)
Stories change me. When someone takes the time to write his/her/their own story, to share their experience or their suffering, it impacts me. I change how I view the world, how I understand what life is like for another human being who has walked a different path. And when story writers take me on adventures, I'm not only entertained but inspired to live a larger life, to be brave, and to seek to do good. These are the reasons I read.
As a physician with a full-time job, I’m dependent upon and indebted to, Indigo’s uniquely-gifted amazing staff to make the real magic.
